Muban Chomebueng Rajabhat University

MCRU

Background

From Chombueng Village College (CVC) to Chombueng Village Teacher college (CVTC)

Adopted from Turkey, MCRU was founded on March 1, 1954 as the Village College called Chombueng Village Collage. It was intended to be the educational institution to produce teachers who at the same time could also be active community leaders for community development of communities in rural parts of the country. The students, therefore, were all required to study not only subjects in the curriculum but had to learn and receive hard-working practices in agricultural and vocational works as well. Students had to live in the collage’s dormitory so that they could be disciplined and learned how to live with others. The college started to operate on September 1, 1957 with the five year curriculum for scholarship-granted students from rural area.

However, because of the country shortage of teachers due to the “baby boom phenomenon”, CVC was transformed to Chombueng Village Teacher Collage (CVTC) to fully produce teachers for the country in 1970. With relaxation of its originality, CVTC offered certificate of teacher education and diploma of teacher education in both full-time and part-time (evening) programs.  After there was the Teacher college act in 1975, the bachelor degree in education could be offered. In 1984, the teacher college was accepted as the higher education institution and could produce the bachelor degree programs in management science.

From Chombueng Village Teacher Collage to Muban (village) Chombueng Rajabhat Institute (MCRI)

On January 28, 1995 the Rajabhat Institute Act was announced. Then, CVTC became Muban Chombueng Rajabhat Institute (MCRI). The name given by His Majesty the King, “Rajabhat Institute” (RI) connoted the concept of higher education institution for local development, so that every RI, about 38 RIs who transformed from Teacher Colleges all over Thailand, has committed themselves to the concept. Academic programs were diversified to sciences and technology and humanities and social sciences in addition to their “signature program”, education. They had to perform other important higher educational duties, including conducting research, providing academic services, preserving arts and culture and, with great honor, implementing projects under royal initiatives. All missions are supposed to be for local development.

From Muban Chombueng Rajabhat Institute (MCRI) to Muban Chombueng Rajabhat University (MCRU)

MCRI was transformed into Muban Chombueng Rajabhat University (MCRU) in 2004. Still committed itself as higher educational institution for local development, MCRU is organized into four faculties, Education, Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Science, Management Science and two collages, Muay Thai Study and Thai Traditional Medicine, and the Graduate School. Four supportive organizations were also set up to support implementation of the missions. These are the Office for Supporting Academic Progress and Student Registration, Research and Development Institute, Office of Arts and Culture, Library and Information Technology Center. This mid-side university of 253 lecturers, 205 supportive personnel and about 1,700 students admitted each year, currently offers 45 academic programs covering the full range of education, sciences and technology, health science, management science, humanities, and social sciences.
